Serhiy Sheremet
After graduating, I wanted to take a break from too many responsibilities, so instead of looking for a permanent job, I decided to look for something that would give me unprecedented experience and fortitude, so that I could later freely develop my professional career path. Honestly, at first, I didn’t even think about going to China because there are so many people there, the regime is unfriendly and of course, I would be miles away from home. However, I received an offer that, as a student of European studies and an aviation enthusiast, I could not refuse. After several stages of the interview, I heard the decision that I could start my adventure with one of the three largest and best hotels in China. I did a four-month internship there.
As I learned later, several large airlines rent rooms in this hotel for their crew, including Emirates, Qatar, Lufthansa, Saudia, ANA and Thai. I had a lot of opportunities to establish new contacts and learn a lot about the internal organization of airline work and current trends in aviation.
I received the position of management trainee, first in the Food & Beverage branch and then in the Front Office. I spent several months in the hotel bar and restaurants and became familiar with the internal processes and management. Later, I worked in the lobby as a Guest Relation Officer, where my main responsibility was to greet guests and establish contact with them. I met many interesting people and their life and success stories. I was also the “face” of the hotel, promoting it in Hong Kong.
The most important experience for me was learning about the Chinese management system and communication between branches and managers. Everything is absolutely different from what the West represents. This knowledge gained from practice is priceless – books and lectures alone cannot provide a similar amount of professional baggage.
I studied at UITM for 6 long years, which I am fully satisfied with. During my studies, I had a scholarship for my academic results every year and was a member of the TOP20 ranking. I wrote all my diploma theses without any special help from supervisors and defended them with the highest grades. During my studies, I completed internships and participated in internships related to aviation – at the airport in Jasionka and in a Warsaw company cooperating with Star Alliance.
I spent the first 3 years of my education at UITM, majoring in European studies. Due to the fact that I approach life with great ambition, in the third year I decided to pursue two specializations – full-time and part-time. Honestly, it was a nice experience that helped me in the future.
During the sixth semester, I learned that from the new academic year, the university will be opening an English-language, elite field of study – Aviation Management, among others, the first in Poland and one of several in Europe. I decided to apply for this field because aviation is my passion. It turned out that for this you need an English language certificate at the B2 level, which I did not have at the time. The next 2 months were very busy for me – I had to finish my bachelor’s thesis, prepare for my defence and in the meantime learn English.
After completing my first-cycle studies, I started studying two fields of study simultaneously – Aviation Management (Bachelor’s studies) and Economics (Master’s studies), both full-time. For the next 2 years, my life revolved only around learning and books. As I wrote earlier, I am an ambitious person by nature, so it was still not enough for me. Then I decided to participate in the ERASMUS program and won a trip to a university in Germany. But it wasn’t always easy here either. After many complications, I finally went to IUBH in Bad Honnef. My trip was far from a relaxing atmosphere – due to two fields of study, I had an incredible amount of work and activities.
